About the Qualification

The NEBOSH Construction Certificate is a qualification both for those with construction management responsibilities and for those who are required to provide routine, day-to-day advice on health, safety and welfare in construction work.

The programmed of study broadly mirrors that of the National General Certificate. However, due to the specific nature of the award, the opportunity arises to cover key construction issues in rather more technical detail than would be appropriate for a general health and safety award.

The Construction Certificate therefore contains additional units and requires a slightly longer programmed of study than its counterpart. It is thus designed to cover general health and safety issues within a construction context as well as placing emphasis on the specific construction issues that make the industry amongst the most dangerous in which to work.

The syllabus is divided into nineteen units:

  • Health and safety foundations
  • Policy
  • Organizing for health and safety
  • Promoting a positive health and safety culture
  • Risk assessment
  • Principles of control
  • Incident investigation, recording and reporting
  • Monitoring, review and audit
  • General site issues - hazards and control
  • Working at height - hazards and control
  • Excavation work and confined spaces - hazards and control
  • Demolition hazards and control
  • Movement of people and vehicles - hazards and control
  • Work equipment hazards and control
  • Manual and mechanical handling hazards and control
  • Electrical hazards and control
  • Fire hazards and control
  • Chemical and biological health hazards and control
  • Physical and psychological health hazards and control

Examination Details

The examination comprises two 2-hour written papers (Papers NGC1 and NGC 2) and a practical assessment. Each written paper consists of one 'long-answer' question and ten 'short-answer' questions and the practical assessment consists of carrying out a health and safety inspection of a construction site, or part of a site, and preparing a management report. All questions are compulsory. The written papers and the practical assessment must be taken at the same centre.

To help maintain flexibility, SHEilds allow students to sit the examinations at their local NEBOSH accredited test centre or a local British Council where available however an additional sitting fee may be applicable.
