The NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Civil Contingencies Management (NEBOSH CCM) formally known as the NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Disaster & Emergency Management (DEMS) the syllabus has now been updated to ensure that it covers the requirements of the Civil Contingencies Act.

This eLearning course is designed to provide an overview of the key strategic techniques, methodologies and issues that private and public sector organisations need to identify and act upon in order to prevent (or to effectively manage the severity and probability of) man-made and industrial disasters and emergencies.

Applicants would normally hold the NEBOSH Safety Diploma Part 2, the previous NEBOSH Safety Diploma, or an equivalent qualification leading to membership of IOSH to at least TechSP grade. Candidates with a level 3 health and safety qualification (e.g. the NEBOSH certificate or equivalent) and a suitable higher education qualification will also be considered.

The course comprises of the following elements:

• Historical development, definitions & institutions
• Law, guidance & sources of information
• Major incident investigation & public inquiries
• Case studies I of major accidents & disasters
• Management of disasters & emergencies I (SMS in Seveso II, Mitroff & Pearson’s crisis management approach, FEMA, organisational learning approaches)
• Management of disasters & emergencies II (DEMS – including business continuity & contingency planning)
• Guidance on major incidents: police/fire/NHS & local government
• Simulation, testing & reporting: scenario analysis
• Case studies II & guidance on course assessment (report)
• Systems reliability. Forensic science –forensic engineering
• Fire safety & structural failures (including case studies III)
• Rescue equipment, design & integrity
• Monitoring the environment
• Epidemiology : monitoring health consequences
• Submission of reports, class presentations and course conclusions.
