Entry Requirements
No formal entry requirements exist to enrol on to this NEBOSH National Environmental Diploma Course.
It will be beneficial for students to have already achieved certification in the Environmental Certificate before attempting this nebosh Diploma level course, as this greatly improves a students’ potential end-result.
NEBOSH Diplomas are equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree and candidates must be prepared to study at this level.
NEBOSH recommend that students score 7.0 or higher in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
Questions within NEBOSH examinations are all phrased in English. Your answers are also required to be provided in English.
As long as you meet the required standard of English, you can enrol on this NEBOSH Diploma.
Study Syllabus
The qualification is divided into two primary learning units and one assignment:
- Unit ED1: Controlling environmental aspects
- Unit IDEM2 (assignment): Environmental regulation
With a total of 14 unit elements to study and 1 assignment to submit, you’ll learn how to apply your knowledge of health and safety management in the workplace to the very highest standard.

Course Assessment
One Written Exam + One Assignment
There are 12 units to study followed by one three hour, in-person written exam (Unit ED1).
You must also study 2 units and submit an 8,000 word, work-place based assignment (Unit IDEM2), consisting of a report with recommendations.
How the course is graded
To pass this NEBOSH International Environmental Diploma, candidates will need to achieve:
- At least 45% from the written exam paper (Unit ED1), plus
- A minimum of 50% from the IDEM2 Unit Assignment
Students must complete the written exam paper Unit ED1 and the Unit IDEM2 Assignment (a practical report) before a final overall grade is awarded.
To achieve the minimum pass grade the percentage grade for each unit are added together.
The NEBOSH International Environmental Diploma grading boundaries are as follows:
- 0 – 94 marks: Refer
- 95 – 114 marks: Pass
- 115 – 134 marks: Credit
- 135 marks and above: Distinction

Steps to Pass
Essentially there are 5 steps to passing the NEBOSH International Diploma in Environmental Management.
- Enrol on the International Environmental Diploma with SHEilds.
- Study the 12 elements of the ED1 Unit.
- Register for and sit your ED1 written exam, at an exam centre.
- Study 2 elements of the Project Assignment unit (IDEM2).
- Register for the Project Assignment (IDEM2) and submit your report to the NEBOSH website.
Once ED1 exam and IDEM2 assignment are both submitted and marked, you’ll receive your final grade.
You will receive your results electronically (email), directly from NEBOSH on the results declaration date – information can be found on your booking confirmation slip.
