Recommended for

This NVQ in mental health, is an awareness level course and those qualified are not expected to be able to deal with serious mental health issues alone – that would require a higher level qualification. As this is an awareness level course, it is designed for those with a need to effectively advise employees within the workplace, where to get the best help as regards to mental wellbeing.

Study Method

Very much self-paced – learners are expected to undertake research in their own time or during working hours, to gather information in order to complete a template. Evidence can be gathered from online or offline sources. Online access is provided to submit this evidence for evaluation to your portfolio.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is approved for candidates aged 19 and over. Although there are no other formal entry requirements to enrol onto the qualification, as a provider SHEilds must carry out an initial assessment of a potential candidates skills and knowledge before they are permitted to enrol. This aids to identify any gaps and to plan the assessment.

Therefore our ProQual NVQ training courses have Eligibility Criteria, which should be met before a candidate can enrol to undertake the qualification.

NVQ Training Support

Unlimited NVQ support is included with this course. Our assessors will provide you with all the guidance you need to complete this NVQ.

Course Assessment

SHEilds NVQ assessors guide learners and provide assistance, but this qualification is very much self research-based, where learners are expected to locate and gather relevant information in order to complete the NVQ course. NVQ assessors provide feedback on the information submitted to aid learners in completing the course.
Once your dedicated NVQ assessor is satisfied and your work is double checked internally at SHEilds to ensure the evidence is a high-enough standard, it will be submitted to ProQual for external verification.
Proqual will review the submitted evidence and inform us (SHEilds) of your result, we’ll then contact you and arrange delivery of your physical Certificate as proof of achieving the qualification.

Examinations

There are NO EXAMS for this course, you are assessed solely on your submitted work-based evidence and documents

Steps to Pass

Essentially there are 3 steps to passing this NVQ Level 2 in Mental Health First Aid Awareness qualification.

NVQ assessors guide you as you submit your evidence.
Our internal verifier checks over your submitted evidence.
Your evidence is sent to ProQual to be externally verified.

Certificate Delivery

When your evidence has passed the requirements to gain the qualification, you’ll receive a physical certificate as proof you have passed the NVQ level 2 course. We’ll then contact you and arrange for delivery of your course completion certificate to an address of your choosing.

Career Progression

Once certified with the NVQ Level 2 in Mental Health First Aid Awareness qualification, we recommend studying a level 3 certificate course, such as NEBOSH or ProQual NVQ.

Understand what is meant by mental health	1.1 Identify what is meant by the terms mental health and well being. 1.2 Describe the aims of mental health first aid. 1.3 Describe how the actions of others can negatively affect individuals with a mental health condition. 1.4 Identify what is meant by the mental health continuum.
2. Understand common mental health conditions	2.1 Identify the main signs and symptoms of mental health disorders/crises/problems including: Depression, substance misuse, addiction, anxiety disorders, including stress, phobias, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self harm, suicide, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders. 2.2 Identify risk factors for the mental health disorders / crises / problems listed above.
3. Understand the role of the mental health first aider	3.1 Identify the skills and strengths of a mental health first aider. 3.2 Identify common treatments and/or interventions for managing mental ill health. 3.3 Identify how the mental health first aider can support individuals showing signs or symptoms of mental health disorders or problems. 3.4 Identify sources of reliable information, support and guidance for mental health first aiders. 3.5 Identify examples of strategies that can reduce the risk of mental health issues arising.
