The purpose of this session is to provide to staff with an introduction to safe practice in controlling infection and Communicable Diseases and to comply with the relevant legislation as detailed in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and others.

  • How infection is spread in the nursing and residential care environment

  • Care management and intervention techniques
  • Protective clothing and equipment designed to reduce risk

4.6.1           Identify the infection risks in the workers living and working environment.

4.6.2           Identify main routes of infection.

4.6.3           Identify a range of communicable diseases.

4.6.4           Understand the measures to prevent the spread of infection.

4.6.5           Know how to wash hands properly.

4.6.6      Understand the purpose and need for using of personal protective equipment.

 

TOPSS FOUNDATION

3.2.1      Understand the personal risks to the worker's safety and  well-being and the safeguards required to minimise risk.

Proposed Candidate Outcomes

The worker must be able to:

  • Identify the infection risks in the workers living and working environment.

  • Understand the purpose and need for using of personal protective equipment.

Designed For: This unit is relevant to workers who provide personal care to clients in all care settings - hospital, residential, day/foster-care or in the client’s own home
